Working the Tweed: new work for Year of Natural Scotland
The ‘Working the Tweed’ project brings together Kate Foster (visual artist), Jules Horne (writer), Claire Pençak (choreographer) and James Wyness (composer) with local environmental organisations Tweed Forum and Southern Uplands Partnership. It is one of 14 projects across Scotland to be awarded ‘Year of Natural Scotland 2013’ funding, and will focus on the iconic River Tweed from source to mouth, and particularly the people that work on and around it. We aim to try and capture the voices of the people that work the Tweed, and bring to the surface some of the more hidden worlds, maps and languages of the river.

The Year of the Bird at Maitland Regional Gallery, New South Wales
Curated by Helen Hopcroft and Caelli Jo Brooker, the exhibition The Year of the Bird features work by Vanessa Barbray, Caelli Jo Brooker, Marian Drew, Kate Foster and Merle Patchett, David Hampton, Helen Hopcroft, Pamela See, Emma van Leest, Trevor Weekes and Helen Wright.

Dr Rod Bennison, CEO of Minding Animals International, will be opening the Year of the Bird exhibition on Saturday 23rd February, 2013.

In October 2012, 3 creative practitioners from the Borders travelled to MoKS Centre for Art & Social Practice in Estonia for a 2 week residency.
They were:
Kate Foster – visual artist
James Wyness – sound artist
Jules Horne – writer, playwright
We are hosting an informal opportunity for you to hear firsthand about their experiences in Estonia, how they responded to the impressions and surroundings of MoKS, and more about how the MoKS model works. This is an opportunity to discuss how residencies develop artistic practice and what links we can make now and in the future with international residency programmes. MoKS is set in Mooste – a very rural part of Estonia, and there were many intriguing parallels and differences with the Borders.

Drawings about Lac-tek on show in Selkirk
New work is on show in The Forest Bookstore in Selkirk (a bookshop dedicated to art, nature and environment). Annotated drawings document an investigation that began with the welcome arrival on a Borders Farm, a milk machine at lambing time. The drawings are titled Composition (Palm & Coconut)
